The Royal Women’s Hospital (RWH) is a major teaching hospital specialising in obstetrics, neonatal intensive and special care, and gynaecology, including gynae-oncology. The pharmacy department has 40 staff including pharmacists, technicians and pharmacy students. For 2027, there are 3 intern pharmacist positions available.

Intern program information

Aim of the program

The intern program at RWH aims to provide a step-by-step progression towards becoming a skilled early-career pharmacist. In the beginning of the year, there is close supervision during each rotation and a 1:1 learning experience with your supervising pharmacist. The program gradually transitions interns towards increased independence and responsibility with each rotation building upon your skills, by the latter half of the year, interns will be performing many professional activities, including contact with other health professionals regarding prescription problems, interactions, and legal requirements.


Structure of the program

Intern pharmacist rosters will include experience in the following areas:

  • Clinical wards
  • Gynaecology/Gynae-oncology:

Includes general medicine, surgical and higher acuity clinical learning, and an introduction to Pharmacist Partnered Charting

  • Obstetrics, including patients on opioid replacement therapy, and patients with high-risk pregnancies
  • Neonatal intensive care and special care nurseries
  • Medicines information and publication
  • RWH Outpatient dispensary & Frances Perry House Private Hospital
  • Manufacturing of non-sterile products
  • Drug usage evaluation, clinical trials, adverse drug reaction committee, intervention reports

Education program

In addition to the education and training received through exposure to clinical ward pharmacy and other activities, intern pharmacists will also be involved with:

  • Regular tutorials following a structured Parkville precinct program (Including Peter Mac and Royal Melbourne Hospital Interns)
  • Practice exams
  • Research projects, which may be presented at the annual AdPha National Pharmacy Conference
  • Continuing Education presentations and journal club

Hospital staff education program, including:

  • Continuing education presentations within the pharmacy department
  • Grand Rounds at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
  • Educational talks from members of other departments
  • Presentations from external presenters

Although based at the Royal Women’s Hospital, rotations or visits to other areas may be arranged, including:

  • Operating theatre visits
  • Sterile compounding unit
  • Royal Melbourne Hospital
  • Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
